24hrs: What’s it like being young in Hollywood? Are there people dragging you into trouble, or do you have to go and find it?

Hilary: It’s everywhere, it’s really easy to find it. I love L.A. I live there, it’s my home, but it’s really easy to lose yourself in that town. You have to really know what you believe in and stick with it and have good friends.

24hrs: So being focused on yourself and what you want to put out there has kept your head above it?

Hilary: That and my family. I don’t like to live very publicly, like so many people do. I feel like I’ve worked so much as it is, I want privacy.

24hrs: For most of us, running into an ex at the mall would be painful. How is it for you to see your ex (Joel Madden with new girlfriend Nicole Richie) paraded across the tvs and tabloids this week?

Hilary: It’s not really a problem for me to deal with it. I want them to be happy. Joel and I ended on very good terms and we ended knowing that it was the right thing to do and it made us both happy. So it’s not hard for me to see it.

The teen celebrity served the hot lunch and dessert for an hour at a downtown emergency shelter, and visited the nearby headquarters of Hope Mission, a Christian social care agency.

“The Hope Mission was a priority and we wanted to lend a hand,” she said after completing her kitchen shift. “It’s so rewarding for me. I love to get down and dirty and help out.”

Hunger and homelessness are intertwined and simple problems to solve, Duff said, adding that compassion is key.

“A big misconception of charity work and celebrities is that it takes a lot of money,” she said. “It doesn’t take a lot of money. Your time is the best thing you can give.”

At the mention of reports that Duff is dating New York Islanders player Mike Comrie, the 19-year-old singer’s face brightened with a girlish grin, calling it a funny coincidence to be performing in Comrie’s hometown.

“I’m in Edmonton, he’s from Edmonton,” she said, squirming in her chair. “Some of the guys (at the shelter) asked me about him, about hockey.”

Hope Mission spokeswoman Janelle Aker said Duff’s efforts will help raise awareness with a younger demographic that might not know about the emergency shelter. Many of Duff’s fans are children.

“She stayed for the whole lunch,” Aker said. “Until the last man received his food.”

Hilary Duff and Nick Cannon will team up to host the 2007 Teen Choice Awards later this month.

This is Hilary’s second time hosting the Teen Choice Awards. Over the years, she’s received 11 Teen Choice nominations for her work in film and TV.

The ninth annual celebration of all things teen-y will air on FOX on Sunday, Aug. 26.

According to sources, the 19-year-old pop star is dating Edmonton native Mike Comrie, 26.

The couple was snapped in Santa Monica on Wednesday night after enjoying a romantic dinner at Il Ristorante di Giorgio Baldi. They drove off together in Comrie’s vehicle.

Comrie and Duff have at least one thing in common: Both their fathers have retail backgrounds. Bill Comrie is founder of The Brick chain of furniture stores and Robert Duff is the owner of a chain of convenience stores.

Troubled Britney Spears has found a sympathizer in Hilary Duff for the mistakes she commits as a mother.

Duff feels that the media was unnecessarily picking on the pop star, when they criticized the way she failed to strap her kids in the car seat.

The 20-year-old said that it absolutely natural for anyone to commit such mistakes.

“I remember when all that stuff came out about her not strapping her baby in the car seat right. I was just like, ‘Leave her alone.’ My mom said to me, ‘Do you know how many times I dropped you on your head or let you fall off something accidentally?’ It just happens,” Contact Music.com quoted her, as saying.

Hilary Duff struggles with sleep deprivation - because she can’t go to bed until her living space is spotless.

The singer also admits she cannot sleep past 7am, and even cleans up hotel rooms before checking out - because she can’t abide mess of any kind.

She tells Maxim magazine, “I’m Ocd (obsessive compulsive disorder) when it comes to cleaning. I can’t go to bed with a messy room. That would totally wig me out. It freaks me out to have dishes in the sink.”

“I practically clean my hotel room before I check out. I wish I weren’t psychotic like that, but I am.”

And Duff’s early rising addiction disturbs her pals.

She adds, “No matter how late I stay out the night before, I will wake up at 7am. It’s kind of sick.”

“My friends are like, ‘What are you doing up? Go to bed. That’s creepy.’”

With the constant public attention that celebrities live under today, it comes as no surprise that they often feel the need to protect their personal time. That’s exactly what happened when Hilary Duff went on a recent dinner outing with her mother and sister, as the Lizzie McGuire actress stonewalled two nine year old fans requesting autographs - leaving them in tears.

Hilary had been on a quiet vacation in Texas with her family and was dining at the Pier 36 Seafood and Oyster bar when she was spotted. Within moments, two nine year old fans came running up to Hilary asking her to sign their t-shirts and posters. However, she quickly declined, stating, “I don’t really get to spend a lot of time with my family; sorry,” then turned to exit the restaurant as the little girls wept.

What appeared to add insult to injury was Hilary’s decision on the way out of the restaurant to oblige the manager by signing one the restaurants menus.

“On their way out, the owner asked if Hilary would sign a menu and she did,” the New York Daily News quoted an insider, as saying. Not exactly a text book way of protecting your fan base.

Miss Duff has revealed she always takes an impressive shoe collection with her on tour - because sometimes she needs cute footwear to feel better about herself.

She told People magazine recently: “When you’re on tour - except for at night because you get dressed up for the show - normally you look so gross. You just throw on sweats and don’t do anything with yourself until the show.”

“After about a month of that you’re like, ‘I feel like a man. I need to be cute.’ So I have to have cute shoe options and put a little effort into it.”

She added her dogs are also on her essentials list: “I bring my two dogs with me. It’s hard because you’re in a different hotel room almost every day and it’s just so impersonal. I’m definitely a homebody so having them there makes it more comfortable.”

Hilary Duff is unconvinced she has just one soul mate, insisting it’s unnatural to have only one life partner. The star is currently single after splitting from Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden - who has since moved on to a new relationship with socialite Nicole Richie. Although Duff is on the lookout for a new man, she admits it’s doubtful she will spend all her life with one partner.

She says, “I don’t believe in having one partner for your whole life, but I hope I get married. I want to have a husband and two kids and a nice little life baking pies. I’m quite romantic. It’s definitely important to have someone to make you feel special.”
